Mailbox Monday

Hello Lovely Readers,

Last week was ridiculous! I have had so many books pop up on my radar and I’m having to plot my reading schedule with some serious triage strategy. So many books, so little time!

Mailbox Monday is a gathering place for readers to share the books that came into their house last week and explore the great book blogs out there! Mailbox Monday was created by Marcia of To Be Continued and is now being hosted here.

Advanced Review Copies

The Last Year of the War by Susan Meissner

The Last Year of the War

I received an eARC of Meissner’s newest book this week. This historical fiction is set during WWII in the internment camps in the United States.

“A family is suddenly arrested on suspicion of being a Nazi sympathizer. The family is sent to an internment camp in Texas, where, behind the armed guards and barbed wire, Elise feels stripped of everything beloved and familiar, including her own identity. The only thing that makes the camp bearable is meeting fellow internee Mariko Inoue, a Japanese-American teen from Los Angeles, whose friendship empowers Elise to believe the life she knew before the war will again be hers.”

The Lieutenant's Nurse by Sara Ackerman Book Cover

Another historical fiction based in WWII! I haven’t read may books set around Pearl Harbor so I suspect this will be riveting. Also, that cover is gorgeous. What secrets are you hiding Lt Clark, hmmm? I will be starting this one this week as I am far too curious to wait to find out Clark’s secrets.

“Set in the vibrant tropical surroundings of the Pacific, The Lieutenant’s Nurse is an evocative, emotional WWII story of love, friendship and the resilient spirit of the heroic nurses of Pearl Harbor.”

A Bend in the Stars by Rachel Barenbaum

Like other bookworms, I love to receive book mail! I was surprised to have a package from a publisher this week but I’m so happy to have a chance to read this story. Miri sounds fierce and I’m excited to move this up on my TBR! The cover of my book is different and I’m really hoping they stick with the change. As pretty as this edition is, I love the silhouette on the copy I received.

“An epic love story and a heart-pounding journey across WWI-era Russia, about an ambitious young doctor and her scientist brother in a race against Einstein to solve one of the greatest mysteries of the universe. Grounded in real history — and inspired by the solar eclipse of 1914 — A Bend in the Stars offers a heart-stopping account of modern science’s greatest race amidst the chaos of World War.

Library

This week was busy for my library holds! Two physical books and two ebooks.

99 Percent Mine – Sally Thorne’s new contemporary romance finally arrived after I waited for my turn in the holding queue. It sounds cute though I don’t really understand the “forbidden” sibling best friend trope. I’m excited to read it.

The Matchmaker’s List – I am excited to read Lalli’s debut romance. Disastrous blind dates can be hysterical and I’m curious to see how the author weaves tradition with modern expectations of free choice.

Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking  –  This book sounded right up my alley when I stumbled across a review of it recently. “In Quiet, Susan Cain argues that we dramatically undervalue introverts and shows how much we lose in doing so.” As an introvert, I was curious to see Cain’s argument and I may be a tiny bit hopeful that it will be the cheerleader I need right now.

The Disasters – I’ve already read one YA Sci-Fi this year and enjoyed it. I’m hoping I will like this one more as its about underdogs (failures) trying to save the day. Also, here’s to hoping there isn’t a random romance shoehorned in.

There have been a lot of really great WWII books recently. I find myself looking for WWI after reading Girls on the Line by Amy Runyan but I haven’t been as lucky! Thank you for the link to yours!

I enjoy them as well! I avoid books set more recently simply because my spouse is active duty but I love to read about the different ways that women served or aided the cause in WWI and WWII. Much of that information was left out of the history books I saw when I was younger.
