Hello Lovely Readers,

I hope this post finds you all happy, healthy, and surrounded by books! I am slowly starting to come out of my reading funk thanks to a couple of fabulous, funny books. Hopefully, the trend will continue! I didn’t have a chance to post last Sunday/Monday for Currently Reading and Mailbox Monday so I will be combing the last two weeks this time.

This Week in Reading...

I am trucking my way through the audio version of Force of Nature and it is really creepy so far! It is definitely a different book then the first Aaron Falk. I’m continuing to hack my way through Blood Moon Part 2. I have promised myself to finish it before March. Before you ask, it isn’t length that is slowing me down…

Mission: Improper is my current Romanceopoly read for London Street. I haven’t read a steampunk book before so it has been a fun experience. The chemistry between the leads is off the charts and the mystery baffling.

Last Week in Reading...

Reading In a Badger Way and Magic Bleeds proved to be a quick way to pull me out of my reading rut.

I started Magic Bleeds as I just wasn’t ready to pick up The Alice Network again. To be honest, I may table Quinn’s novel until I’m in the mood for historical fiction. While the book is very well written, I don’t care for the characters which make it tough to pick up. This is the second book club book that I haven’t been able to finish from lack of interest.

I finished The Dry by Jane Harper on audiobook and the review is up. Harper really has a knack for bringing the Australian outback to life! I enjoyed it so much that I went ahead and started the next book Force of Nature.

Advanced Review Copies...

The Missing Years by Lexie Elliott

Thank you to the Berkley Marketing Team for sending an advanced copy of Lexie Elliot’s The Missing Years! I’m looking forward to cracking this one open and heading to the Highlands!

Synopsis:

An eerie, old Scottish manor in the middle of nowhere that’s now hers.

Ailsa Calder has inherited half of a house. The other half belongs to a man who disappeared without a trace twenty-seven years ago—her father.

Leaving London behind to settle the inheritance from her mother’s estate, Ailsa returns to her childhood home, nestled amongst the craggy peaks of the Scottish Highlands, joined by the half-sister who’s almost a stranger to her.

Ailsa can’t escape the claustrophobic feeling that the house itself is watching her—as if her past hungers to consume her. She also can’t ignore how the neighbourhood animals refuse to set one foot within the gates of the garden.

When the first nighttime intruder shows up, Ailsa fears that the manor’s careless rugged beauty could cost her everything.

In a Badger Way by Shelly Laurenston

I was thrilled to have my NetGalley review request accepted for In a Badger Way! I’ve been waiting a year for this book and picked it up as soon as it came in this week. Shelly never fails to make me laugh and I adore the world she has created. Now I’m anxious for the last “sister” book featuring Max, my absolute favorite. I love her just as much as I love Cella.

Synopsis: Petite, kind, brilliant, and young, Stevie is nothing like the usual women bodyguard Shen Li is interested in. Even more surprising, the youngest of the lethal, ball-busting, and beautiful MacKilligan sisters is terrified of bears. But she’s not terrified of pandas. She loves pandas.

Which means that whether Shen wants her to or not, she simply won’t stop cuddling him. He isn’t some stuffed Giant Panda, ya know! He is a Giant Panda shifter. He deserves respect and personal space. Something that little hybrid is completely ignoring.

But Stevie has a way of finding trouble. Like going undercover to take down a scientist experimenting on other shifters. For what, Shen doesn’t want to know, but they’d better find out. And fast. Stevie might be the least violent of the honey badger sisters, but she’s the most dangerous to Shen’s peace of mind. Because she has absolutely no idea how much trouble they’re in . . . or just how damn adorable she is.

The Bookish Life of Nina Hill by Abbi Waxman

I was unbelievably excited to receive an advanced copy of The Bookish Life of Nina Hill through Penguin FirsttoRead. It has been on my anticipated release shelf since the end of last year. An introvert myself and a fan of Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine, I am looking forward to following Nina’s journey. I think this will be one of my “library” reads for Romanceopoly.

The only child of a single mother, Nina has her life just as she wants it: a job in a bookstore, a kick-butt trivia team, a world-class planner and a cat named Phil. If she sometimes suspects there might be more to life than reading, she just shrugs and picks up a new book.

When the father Nina never knew existed suddenly dies, leaving behind innumerable sisters, brothers, nieces, and nephews, Nina is horrified. They all live close by! They’re all—or mostly all—excited to meet her! She’ll have to Speak. To. Strangers. It’s a disaster! And as if that wasn’t enough, Tom, her trivia nemesis, has turned out to be cute, funny, and deeply interested in getting to know her. Doesn’t he realize what a terrible idea that is?

Nina considers her options.

1. Completely change her name and appearance. (Too drastic, plus she likes her hair.)
2. Flee to a deserted island. (Hard pass, see: coffee).
3. Hide in a corner of her apartment and rock back and forth. (Already doing it.)

It’s time for Nina to come out of her comfortable shell, but she isn’t convinced real life could ever live up to fiction. It’s going to take a brand-new family, a persistent suitor, and the combined effects of ice cream and trivia to make her turn her own fresh page.

Bought and Borrowed...

I have spent the tiny bits of free time I had this week trying to plan out my reads for Romanceopoly. The ladies over at UTC announced a readathon for April with prompts so I’ve been trying to make it work with what I have readily available. I picked up The Deal and Enemies with Benefits for free on Amazon so I’m set for at least two spots!

A while back I recommended the ebook version of Beautiful Stranger through the MWR Libraries Overdrive because those monsters only had the audiobooks for over half of the Christina Lauren books available. Imagine my surprise when they actually did pick it up! Truly a heady sense of power over MWR’s library selection… makes you want to dance.

  1. I’ve heard a lot of great things about Harper’s work so I’m not surprised to see you liked it so much. I’d love to get my hands on The Bookish Life of Nina Hill – it sounds like a book a lot of us can relate to.

  2. Fun GIFS. I haven’t read Bec McMasters in a number of years but this title reminds me that I enjoy her steampunk romances. Happy Reading!

  3. Veronica The Burgeoning Bookshelf

I’m yet to read Jane Harper’s books. They are sitting patiently on my TBR. The Missing Years sounds like my type of book. Enjoy!
