Bookending Summer 2019: Popular Books I Couldn’t Get Into

Today’s discussion prompt is for Bookending Summer 2019! Thank you to Rach @ The Must Reads and the other hosts this month for the great ideas! You can find Rachel’s discussion post here. Today, we are letting go of the hype and talking about:

Popular Books That I Couldn’t Get Into
What are some books that got all the hype but that you just couldn’t get into? No judgement here!  Just honest conversation of the books that didn’t work out for us, no matter how much we wanted them to.

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

This book was definitely a frustrating read for me. For a competition, there was surprisingly little drama. I have seen people swoon over this book and I can’t help but feel like I’m missing something. I enjoyed the descriptions and felt like it could make a stunning movie if done correctly but the characters themselves felt flat to me.

In all: I liked the idea but the execution didn’t work for me. I might try Morgenstern’s work again in the future but I’m not completely sold.

Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater

This was one of the first Young Adult books I picked up as I started this whole review blogging journey. Truthfully, I almost completely wrote off the entire genre due to how much this book irritated me. I don’t understand the hype around this one and I will definitely be leaving this series out in the cold.

99 Percent Mine by Sally Thorne

99 Percent Mine

I did not care for this. I heard some great things about The Hating Game and plopped my name onto the library hold for this one after reading a lot of positive buzz for 99 Percent Mine. I ended up feeling like this book was a waste of my time and I wanted to toss the “hero” out the window. I was furious with his deception.

Moon Called by Patricia Briggs

Put the pitchforks and torches away! I put this book down at around 100 pages after Mercy had two or three tearful breakdowns in the space of two chapters. I’m not opposed to my heroines showing emotion but this had me yelling “WHY ARE YOU CRYING!” and getting looks from relatives that were visiting. I did end up finishing it but I felt underwhelmed and may or may not go back to finish the rest of the series.

A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin

I have tried to read this book/series three separate times at different stages of my life and I have decided that George R.R. Martin’s writing style is not for me much like Stephen King isn’t for me. My husband and some of his siblings love this series but I just can’t.

QOTD: What hyped book isn't for you?

  1. Thanks so much for doing my prompt! You’ve got a couple of books on here that I love and a couple that I agree with you on (I also couldn’t do 99 Percent Mine). Love the post!
