BE Summer 2019: Summer Recommendations!

Posted July 26, 2019 by Alana in Bookish / 0 Comments

Hello All!

This summer has been particularly brutal and we are only just over half way done! This morning I donned my “Sleigh all day then Cabernet” Santa sweatshirt because I am desperately wishing for cooler weather! Today, I’m going to try to beat the heat and give some reading recommendations. Thank you to today’s host Amy @ The Little Booknerd In the Corner for today’s prompt! Check out her recommendations here.

Summer Recommendations

Summer is the perfect time to pick up new books after Spring Cleaning. Which 5 books do you recommend for people to read this summer?

The Bookish Life of Nina Hill by Abbi Waxman

Women’s Fiction / Romance

This is in the running to be one of my top books of 2019. I loved Nina with all her quirks and odd sense of humor. My sense of humor tends to run on the irreverent / dark side (My MIL describes it lovingly as twisted) so it is entirely possible the world won’t love Nina and Tom as much as I do. I loved their cute relationship and her new found family was complex and highly entertaining.

Historical Fiction

Girls on the Line was one of my top books of 2018 and renewed my love for historical fiction. I felt so invested in Ruby and was cheering her on through the whole book. I love stories about the unsung heroes of history, particularly women. If you have read this one, I also recommend Flight Girls by Noelle Salazar!

Goodreads

Non-Fiction

I really enjoyed this sneak peek into the lives of therapists. Gottlieb’s book is thought-provoking, uncomfortable, and with plenty of humor to carry us through to the end. Her writing felt engaging, like we were having a cup of coffee as she shared her story and others. I felt incredibly raw and vulnerable after reading it so keep that in mind when you dive in! It is definitely worth the discomfort.

Contemporary Romance / Romantic Comedy

I absolutely loved Caleb and Zara’s story. Avery Flynn truly delivered the laughs and swoons I’ve come to expect from her. Best of all, Zara has a Great Dane named Anchovy and I have spent the last two months trying to convince my husband to trade in our two cats for a giant neurotic dog too. This is the perfect light, fluffy story for reading poolside.

Cover for Parental Guidance by Avery Flynn
Force of Nature by Jane Harper

Mystery / Suspense

I discovered Jane Harper after listening to an audio arc of her newest release The Lost Man. I quickly set about listening to the rest of her books and I am anxiously awaiting her next one! Force of Nature was a gripping, slow-burn that relies heavily on atmosphere. I don’t know if I would have the same reaction reading the book as I did listening but if you have the chance to listen to Stephen Shanahan definitely try it! He is amazing. I had to stop listening at night so I could get some sleep.

Bonus!

Book Cover The Flatshare by Beth O'Leary

I know Amy only asked for 5 recommendations but I finished Beth O’Leary’s  The Flatshare yesterday and I absolutely loved it. The chapters alternate between Tiffy and Leon’s POVs and I loved both equally. The style she used in Leon’s chapters reminded me so much of Mordin from Mass Effect and I love her for it.
