Creep It Real

It is day two of my hosting for Bookending Autumn!

In high school, I used to devour crime procedural novels and mystery/suspense like Iris Johansen, Karin Slaughter, and others. As I’ve gotten older, my tastes have shifted away from the intense novels but occasionally I read and review books that are right up teenage Alana’s lane. The biggest issue is the monsters out in our world are far more ordinary than I like to think about which brings me to today’s prompt!

Now, without further ado lets talk about our favorite creepy novels!

Creep It Real

Thrillers, mystery or suspense novels that feature all too real monsters OR Mysteries and thrillers that made you double check the locks, leave the light on, and made you lose sleep.

This was one of the first books that came to mind when I thought about unsettling books that made me lose sleep. The Wolf and the Watchman is a Nordic Noir and oh boy is this a grim tale. I was inwardly screaming during large parts of this book and I’ve never been so relieved to live with access to various creature comforts. This book is definitely not for the faint of heart.

Books from a killer’s perspective are particularly unnerving, especially when that individual does such a good job of hiding his sociopathic tendencies under a friendly exterior.

I am probably one of the few that didn’t watch more than half of the first episode of this show. Mr. B loved Dexter but I was not feeling it. I will say that the book is fantastic and a bit unnerving particularly with the elegant language Dexter uses to describe things to the reader. I was equal parts entranced and horrified.

A.S. Hatch really managed to drag a response out of me with this book. Usually, I feel pretty neutral but I had hackles raised by the end of this book. Reading books from a killer’s perspective are unnerving but I also hate when it is clear a character is glossing over events or twisting them to make them seem like a totally innocent bystander.

Books that make me question the whether events are actually happening or just in a character’s head are a bit chilling. This was a slow burn suspense that completely tied me up in knots and I was even a bit distressed for Aisla as everything kept happening… maybe?

What are some of your chilling reads?
